Using English abroad

This is something that surprised me.  While I was on holiday in Rotterdam some months ago looking at a shop that offered recycled handicrafts  (studio hergebruik), I was asked whether I would be prepared to say some words about the shop.  I apologised, saying that I was a foreign visitor and therefore not able to speak Dutch,  and was very surprised when the reporter said that we could do the interview in English.  Now isn’t that great?

You might like to listen to my interview here (it starts at around 12.16 minutes):

    Hi Christine,
Well, that’s really great. Weren’t you shocked that you were forced to speak on camera?
Have you ever thought of getting your students on camera? I think it would be an exciting experiment – not only for your students!

    Hi Tilly

I was very nervous. In fact, at the beginning of the interview you can hear me speak about Amsterdam, although we were in Rotterdam!!

I was once interviewed by a reporter from Radio Berg, and when I heard my voice on the radio a week or so later, I didn’t like it! ;-)

Actually I was thinking of videotaping participants’ presentations at a workshop next year. Have you ever seen yourself on film?

    Best
    Christine
